Hungry Cities Event Series, CCA Glasgow

June 2019, CCA Glasgow.

This short programme as part of the CCA Cooking Pot series to coincide with the theme of ‘Political Animal’, examined the role design can play in changing our relationship with food, the city and our communities. The series was designed by Steph Marsden of food/play/food, with assistance from Rea Kenkel, to engage members of the public to with themes that link food, the city and our roles as political animals.

“The relationship between food and cities is fundamental to our everyday lives. The gargantuan effort necessary to feed cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on us and our planet than anything else we do. Yet we rarely stop to wonder how food reaches our plates.”

Hungry City: Lunchtime Book Club

With short readings and a shared lunch, we discussed Carolyn Steel’s book Hungry City.

Book synopsis: “The relationship between food and cities is fundamental to our everyday lives. The gargantuan effort necessary to feed cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on us and our planet than anything else we do. Yet we rarely stop to wonder how food reaches our plates. Hungry City reveals that we have yet to resolve a centuries-old dilemma – one which holds the key to a host of current problems, from obesity, the rise of the supermarkets, to the destruction of the natural world. Carolyn Steel follows food on its journey – from the land to market and supermarket, kitchen to table, waste-dump and back again. She shows how our lives and our environment are being manipulated but explains how we can change things for the better. Original, inspiring and written with infectious enthusiasm and belief, Hungry City illuminates an issue that is fundamental to us all.”

Hungry Cities Design Workshop

A collaborative Food and Design workshop which explored the food system issues of a hungry city.

Based on quotes selected from the book ‘Hungry City’, participants used design and systems thinking to explore potential solutions to food system issues.
